The campervan is great and rather big but we did go for a 6 berth to give us that extra room for bags and space for the boys to throw all their clothes, socks and lads mags everywhere!!!
We head off after saying farewell to Andrea, Budgie, Jade and not forgetting Guiness, well we said bye to Jade and Budgie the night before as they had early starts and no matter how good a friend Budgie is I’m not getting up at Sparrows Fart to say bye. I have achieved my aim and drunk nearly all his beer and got our washing done so it’s off for a little drive down the twisty, winding, up & down Great Coast Road (GCR).
The GCR was built by soldiers by hand after returning from the first world war and the Australian government being good eggs said they would find employment for the 10’s of thousands of soldiers that did return from possibly the worst war in British history. Some took up farming and others who had skills and trades slotted in all over the country and thousands built the GCR by hand. Blasting and digging their way through. Some of it is right on the edge!!! (Check out the pictures) and some meanders in land through grassy farm land where erosion would have just been too much hard work on the coast.
So first stop on this epic journey from Melbourne to Adelaide is Apollo Bay after a stop at the Info shop we have a few sights in mind the first being highly recommended is miles out of town and has no bar, restaurant and generally anything to do although there is a pool but it gets the thumbs down. So back into town a little further but we are disappointed because although they have a pitch it’s not powered and we need electricity to make the telly and microwave work!!! Yes we have 19 inch flat screen TV which the boys are dying to tune in and see what we can get. So we move on to the recreation ground where the local Ozzy Rules footy takes place and out the back they have pitches with power so we are settled.
Steph’s knackered and wants to sleep the trip seems to be catching up with her and she could do with a pint!!! (Blood that is....) her iron tablets are working but not as good as the real stuff but she is soldiering on with plenty of power naps and fluids. Chris and I decide to investigate town for eateries and pubs. We find a short cut and we are pleased to find various places with decent menus and a pub. So armed with info and after 3 games of pool (I lost 2-1) and a pint we head back to share our new knowledge.
On our return Steph is in bed and not bothered about anything and Ste is watching telly. A unanimous decision is made and cheesy beans on toast and a few beers is the meal of choice as we can’t be arsed to walk back to town albeit 10 mins away...
Food finished we sit outside whilst boys watch a film and as if by magic it’s 1030pm where did the time go???? So bed time ready for our next leg of the GCR adventure.
